Omedetou, Kuroda-san !

Kuroda-1.jpgTime and time again, when The Blue need a big game from this veteran pitcher, he delivers!

8 innings, 5 hits only 1 earned run and 7 K’s. After 3 games where our starters went their typical 5 and out, Kuroda did exactly what the Dodgers wanted when they signed him. Eat innings and keep them in the ballgame! And boy did he. I guess it’s early in the season, but it sure would have been nice to see Joe let him go back out their in the 9th for the complete game. ( early in the season, late in the season…when IS it a good time these days???)

By the way, if you watched last nights game, Steve Lyons mentioned that in the 10 years Kuroda pitched for the Hiroshima Carp, he had 75 complete games!

manny-ramirez-heyman.jpgIt took a while for our big bats to finally get to Fish pitcher Volstad, (who pitched a great game by the way), but we finally wore him down. Then once he was gone, we exposed the Marlins poor relief pitching, and broke things wide open !

                                                 Dodgers 7, Fish 3

But back to my pet peeve…..our short armed, starting pitching…Grrrrr
big_head_little_arms_small.jpgGame #1 Vicente Padilla  4.1 innings
Game #2 Clayton Kershaw 4.2 innings
Game #3 Chad Billingsley  5.1 innings

If this continues, it mean Dodger pen IMPLOSION by July 1st.

Come on guys…..

Vin Scully = Dodger Baseball-Part Deux- In my own words…….

VinnyTakemeouttotheballgame.jpg

******I tried to post
this years ago on the

Dodger message board.
But it would

immediately
be deleted. Why?  I will never

know. I just wrote it
in appreciation of a man that has given so much.

Vin Scully IS Dodger
baseball

In this day of free
agency and supposed “loyalty” of ballplayers, the Dodgers you watch
on the field, change every year. The one constant, is Vincent Edward Scully.
Vin Scully. The epitome of a team player.

 Through all the
good times, and bad, Vin has been there for us, to describe it all. And
describe it he does, in beautiful, poetic detail.  After a tough loss, or
a long, terrible road trip, he feels our pain as well.

“Losing hurts
worse, then winning feels good,” he once said.

 Boy, isn’t that
the truth. But Vinny is no homer…He describes everything his eyes see, but
maybe not what you want to hear. During a particularly average Dodger season,
he once said,

“The Dodgers are
such a .500 team, that if there was a way to split a 3 game series, they could
do it.”

 He calls it as
he sees it. But with his decades of memories,  he is always able to put
things in perspective.  Before tv carried every game, Vinny described on
radio, in masterful detail, every play. No “color” commentator
needed. With your eyes closed and the radio on, his words paint a picture, of a
game thousands of miles away. He is just as likely to mix in an elegant quote
from Hamlet, as he is funny lines from Abbot and Costello. No
“boo-ya” or “back, back, back, back, back” for Vinny. . His
home run call is both classic, and amazingly descriptive.

” It’s a long
fly ball to deep left field, back goes Bonds, awaaay back, to the warning
track, the wall, she is GONE!!!!”

To me, the new
baseball season doesn’t start until I hear Vin say, ” Dodger baseball is
on the air!”

The Dodgers, and Vin
Scully, were a huge part of my childhood memories. I snuck a small radio
into my 6th grade class, out of site of course from Sister Mary, during
the 1974 world series. And Vinny was there to describe it all.  And
to explain it all. The ultimate teacher of baseball.

Vin Scully = Dodger Baseball- Part Trois- My brush with fame.

Dodgertown sign.jpg

My best Vin
Memory….

In early  1997,
I was offered the chance to travel to Florida, and visit the Dodgers at their
spring training home of Vero Beach, with my friend, who along with her father,
worked for the Dodgers.

I knew it was going
to be a great trip, something I had wanted to do for years. I had already
traveled to many stadiums around the country, to watch the Dodgers play, but I
knew this was going to be different.

 We were able to
see 3 games at Holman Stadium, watch batting practice at the cages, check out
the future big leaguer’s working on their fielding drills. The whole
enchilada…..

But then things
REALLY got good…..

Friday night
comes around, and the Dodgers were having a huge poolside barbecue, for all the
players, their families, and Dodger personnel. We were invited, and of course
jumped at the chance. I was in HEAVEN. Talking with all the players, their
families, and other Dodger employees. It was awesome. Bill Russell (then
manager), Piazza, Karros, Brett Butler. Of course Tommy was there, the ultimate
ambassador of Dodger baseball, holding court. We had a blast.

 But the best
part was still to come.

 After the party
winded down, another Dodger employee asked if we would like to have a
drink at the bar, inside the commissary. This was a place JUST for Dodger
employees/players . Yup, sounded great. We walk in and there was a huge
“Cheers” like bar, but no bartender. Grab what you want, it’s serve
yourself, we were told.

So we did, and sat
down at one of a few dinner table/poker tables in the back. What a great vibe,
the place was so cool. A few young Dodgers ( I forget who) were playing darts,
and pool.

Then, in walked Bill
Russell. He looked around, and noticing my friends father,, whom he had known
for years, and sat down with us. What a great guy. I can still remember his
“Oklahoma drawl”.He was really down to earth.

He was
in his 2nd year as manager of the Dodgers, and I asked him how he
thought he was doing. He laughed and asked if I was really a reporter. We
talked baseball strategy, his memories of interesting games, and all kinds of
stuff. We laughed a lot. ( He had a few interesting comments about
Lasorda….still cracks me up ! )

 Next thing I
know, Dodger coach  Joey Amalfitano pulls a chair back , and sits
down.  He had a glass of red wine in his hand. I showed him my glass of
wine, and told him he had great taste. He and I immediately hit it off, since
we are both big fans of wine, and Italian food. He was the coolest guy. A
couple of the younger players, who’s names  I can’t remember, also came
over. They were great kids. VERY respectful. Nothing but yes sirs and no sirs.
Bill and Joey were still coaching even then, telling a few of the guys what
they expected out of them tomorrow, what to work on. I could not believe my
luck. The whole experience was almost overwhelming. I was like a sponge, trying
to drink it all in. The setting, the experience, the stories.

 Then, as I
happened to glance over towards the front of the room, the door opens up, and
in walks Vin Scully. He was dressed Florida casual, not the usual shirt and tie
that you see him in. I couldn’t believe it.!  Near the front door, were a
group of rookies playing darts, and Vin stopped to chat with them.  I
couldn’t overhear what was discussed, but they seemed to be listening intently,
to the anecdote or story he was telling. Or maybe he just wanted to know there
names, being the rookies that they were, and introduce himself.

Vin Scully = Dodger Baseball

vinny 008.jpg

I have a lot of Dodgers memorabilia, but this is my most recent, and most prized.

( Notice the authentic 1988 World series T-Shirt. NO…..it does NOT fit me anymore. It’s a medium. I’ve filled out a bit in the last 20+ years.Ha Ha)

Go Blue!

MLB Parks I’ve been to, but I’m getting behind….

Oh my pace has definitely slowed since I was in my 20′s, but I still try and make it to a Dodger game out of town every year.

Here is a  list of stadiums I’ve been to, most of which when the Dodgers played. I’m not sure If I will ever catch up, with all the new stadiums being built.

In no real order…..

  • Candlestick Park
  •  ATT Park
  •  Petco Park
  • Jack Murphy Stadium
  • Angel Stadium(of ANAHEIM)
  •  BankOne BallPark
  •  Coors Field
  •  Astro Dome
  •  Minute Maid Park
  • Three Rivers Stadium
  •  PNC Park
  • Wrigley Field
  • Comisky Park
  • US Cellular Field ( Saw the All-Star game there)
  • Miller Park
  • Riverfront Stadium
  • Great American Ballpark
  • Busch Stadium
  • Turner Field
  • Fenway Park
  • BallPark at Arlington
  • Veterans Stadium
  • SafeCo Field
  • The Kingdome
  • Oakland Coliseum

I might have missed a few, but I think that’s it.  I suppose I could have been to more, just to SEE a game there. But I’ve always tried to go when the Blue were in town. With a few exceptions of course.

That’s why unfortunately I never made it to Yankee Stadium before the wrecking ball.

Spring Training 2009- Hello Camelback Ranch…… RIP Vero Beach

camelback 075.jpg

Well they finally did it. They have been threatening to move from Vero Beach to Arizona for few years now. But Frank did it.

I HATE that he did it, but atleast he did it right.

I took my Dad out to Glendale, Az this spring. We caught 2 games, witnessed the zoo that was the Manny signing, and had a great time.

 The facility is top notch.

It probably has more beautiful green grass then all of Glendale combined.

It’s easy to get players autographs too. The Dodgers definitely made a point of letting the fan’s get as close as possible.

Everything is brand spanking new, state of the art, and first class.

But it has no history. No soul.No memories.

Too much like Disneyland for my taste.

R.I.P. Vero beach. It was nice to have known you.

JONATHAN Broxton…..

Speaking of JONATHAN Broxton…..

When your own team can’t spell your name correct, while trying to immortalize you at the stadium, you know your in for a tough year.

The Gas Can

I know, I know…..Every players goes into a slump, but come on! Jonathan Broxton has now officially become a GAS CAN.

Joe?  Before you bring him in, call up the bullpen coach and ask him this simple question.

” Does his fastball have ANY movement?”

If the answer is no, then DON’T BRING HIM IN !

Have I mentioned just how useless I think Rick Honeycutt is?  Fodder for another post I suppose.

Dodger Fans? Sometimes I wonder….

russell_garvey_cey.jpg

Sitting in the club before each home game having dinner, I am constantly amazed at the complete lack of Dodger knowledge by some fans. ( I know, you will say it’s because most people in the club are not even Dodger fans. Maybe your right)

But every night, there is at least one past Dodger player, quietly having dinner. And completely approachable. No security, or anything.

Just this year,I’ve had short conversations and handshakes with Bill Russell, Rudy Law, Bobby Castillo, Sweet Lou Johnson, Kenny Landreaux, Tommy Davis, Ron Cey and Steve Garvey. Everyone has been as nice as could be. Each pleased to be remembered. I mean come on, Bill Russell???  He was absolutely SHAFTED by the Fox run Dodgers. To have him back at Dodger Stadium for whatever reason, is an honor. ( He now works for MLB , rating umpires)

But every night, most of the crowd doesn’t even recognize them, appreciate what they have contributed to all the great Dodger memories. Not a short hello, a quick picture or a warm handshake. Nothing.

I hate that. I really do.

2008 Opening Day

Sandy Koufax

2008 Opening day was a game I will never forget. I have been to 18 straight opening days, but this one was different. So, so different.

To see all the 1960′s  Dodger greats slowly walk out onto the field, one by one, to the music from Field of Dreams……WOW….. And to see the look on my 72-year-old Dad’s face, was something I will never forget. He knew them all. These were the boys of summer HE grew up with. The players who filled his stories, that he told when I was young. The over the shoulder basket catches, the perfect games, the 9th inning heroics.

Duke Snyder, Wally Moon, Maury Wills, Tommy Davis, Ron Fairly, Roger Craig….Even Don Newcombe, Carl Erskine and YES, Sandy Kofax!!…..Unbelievable. And my dad new them all.

Many of the Dodger greats of the 70′s, 80′s and 90′s came out as well, of course.

But it was the “old timers” that I will never forget.

And the smile on my Dad’s face.
